Strategic relationship building has become a central driver of competitiveness and growth in the banking industry, where long-term customer engagement and trust are critical to sustainable success. Unlike transactional approaches, relationship-based strategies prioritize deeper connections with clients, fostering loyalty, retention, and cross-selling opportunities. This paper reviews customer engagement models and literature-based approaches that have shaped contemporary practices in relationship banking. Foundational models such as the Relationship Marketing framework, the Service-Profit Chain, and the Customer Relationship Management (CRM) paradigm are examined for their contributions to enhancing customer satisfaction and organizational performance. Insights from recent studies emphasize the role of emotional engagement, personalization, and value co-creation in driving customer-centric innovation. The review highlights how digital transformation has redefined relationship building through omnichannel platforms, big data analytics, and artificial intelligence, enabling banks to understand customer behavior in real time and deliver tailored solutions. At the same time, empirical evidence shows that human interaction remains vital, particularly in advisory services, complex transactions, and trust-based decision-making. This duality underscores the need for hybrid engagement models that integrate technological efficiency with human empathy. Building on these perspectives, the paper proposes a strategic framework that aligns customer engagement models with business growth objectives. The framework emphasizes three dimensions: customer-centricity through personalized services and inclusive banking; operational excellence through technology-driven insights and agile service delivery; and trust-building through transparency, ethical practices, and responsive communication. By embedding these elements into banking strategies, financial institutions can strengthen client relationships, increase market share, and enhance brand reputation in a highly competitive landscape. Ultimately, strategic relationship building is positioned not merely as a marketing tool but as an institutional philosophy that drives sustainable business growth. The proposed framework provides banks with actionable pathways to balance profitability with customer trust and long-term engagement.
